War Thunder team announces Aces of Thunder for PS VR2

Aces of Thunder, an upcoming action flight simulator from War Thunder team Gaijin, has just been announced with a new gameplay trailer. A release window has not been confirmed, but it will be available on PlayStation VR2. Aces of Thunder will feature “iconic military aircraft” and online aerial PvP battles. Here’s the full trailer from PlayStation’s YouTube channel:

War Thunder has been a monumental success for years, well-regarded for its authenticity and gameplay that convinces the fanbase to invest one too many hours. Its MMO scale is impressive, featuring a variety of vehicles and complex combat situations that will make any actual victory unusually rewarding.

So, Aces of Thunder is sure to interest longtime fans, and anyone who enjoys the genre. Today’s trailer makes it clear that Aces of Thunder isn’t so much an answer to Microsoft Flight Simulator, as a direct elaboration on War Thunder. That means if you have any issues with the publisher’s original game, you can probably expect to see some of those in this VR title.

There’s definite intrigue for a dedicated VR title like this, and if Aces of Thunder can somehow muster the amount of freedom it hinted at today, then it’ll be a force to be reckoned with.

Despite recent issues with Top Gun: Maverick’s funding, the film was a remarkable surprise hit, and its practical effects really captured the spirit of flying, so it’ll probably still fuel interest in Aces of Thunder.

The new trailer shows off some underwhelming environments, but the vehicles themselves look very promising. Fans are already wondering if Aces of Thunder will be stuck in history, or begin including some kind of DLC for modern aircraft. Either way, it’s clearly an ambitious title worth keeping an eye on.
