Paradox has announced that Victoria 3 sales have crossed the 500,000 mark in just over a month. This makes it one of the most successful Paradox launches of all time, despite the fact that the game is only just beginning to inch past a “Mixed” review score on Steam.
Victoria 3 launched on October 25th, meaning it’s managed to rack up half a million sales in a little over a month. Those are some pretty impressive numbers, and they’re not the only ones, either; in announcing the sales figures, Paradox also took to Twitter to share an infographic showing some of the feats players have achieved since Victoria 3‘s arrival.
The roundup includes fun facts like total playtime adding up to 609,318 days across the player base, or 187 million technologies being researched. Players have constructed 45,614 transcontinental railways and have formed 380,335 countries between them. It is an industrious time indeed.
Paradox might be calling this one of its most successful launches, and that’s certainly true from sales and critical perspectives, but it’s a little less clear-cut when it comes to the player base. The game is currently sitting at a “Mostly Positive” recent review rating on Steam, with a “Mixed” rating for overall reviews.
Fans point to a large abundance of bugs as one of the principal reasons for downvoting the game, as well as mechanics they don’t like or don’t feel are indicative of reality. Of course, it’s difficult to parse exactly what’s going on unless you’re well-versed in Paradox grand strategy, but some reviews say the game has been dumbed down too much, while others accuse it of being boring.
It’s fair to say Paradox has something of a complicated relationship with fans. In the past, the company has hiked DLC prices, provoking anger from its community, and has also been accused of abandoning games like Imperator: Rome. Many players are adopting a wait-and-see attitude for Victoria 3, but they seem to acknowledge there’s no guarantee Paradox will fix the issues they’re raising. DLC, on the other hand?
