Las Vegas – This morning, the Clark County Board of County Commissioners voted to approve magician Jay Owenhouse’s new, revised plan for a tiger-free magic show. His original plan—to confine three tigers to a parking lot near the Las Vegas Strip—was withdrawn last year following opposition from PETA, local residents, and locally based CompassionWorks International.

Below, please find a statement from PETA Foundation Director of Captive Animal Welfare Debbie Metzler:

This exhibitor had to recognize that today’s public doesn’t want to see tigers or any other wild animals confined and exploited for shows. PETA is celebrating his decision to give an animal-free performance while urging him to retire the tigers he’s still holding captive to a reputable sanctuary, where they could live in peace and never be forced to perform again.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
