ROG Ally Set to Launch on May 11, 2023

The all-new gaming handheld by Asus, ROG Ally is set to launch on May 11, 2023. What was first thought to be an April Fool’s joke was actually a reality. ROG revealed the Ally on April 1st, and soon after, a few test samples were sent to certain reviewers. While we didn’t anticipate it to come this quickly, the new handheld is just a few months away.

ROG Ally, a Worthy Steam Deck Competitor?

Steam Deck set a new bar for gaming handhelds which we never knew was attainable. And as soon as a new handheld is revealed it naturally draws a comparison to the Steam Deck, the same is the case with ROG Ally. However, on paper, the Ally looks quite a lot better (and apparently more expensive).

Asus has announced a special launch event for the Ally that will take place along with an official release. Exact pricing will also be provided on the same day along with its specifications and availability.

Specifications and Rumored Pricing

Following is the complete list of ROG Ally’s notable features:

  • AMD Ryzen Z1 CPU (6-Core) with AMD RDNA 3 graphics
  • 7″ 1080p 120Hz 7ms display with FreeSync
  • 512GB PCI Express 4.0 SSD
  • Upto 16GB RAM LPDDR5
  • Wifi 6E
  • Windows 11

The CPU and graphics are a clear winner over the Steam Deck. Another highlighting feature is the screen. While the Deck only comes with a 60Hz display, Ally features a 120Hz display that even supports FreeSync to reduce screen tearing. It runs on Windows, which means it can access all major platforms like Steam, Epic Games, EA Play, and others.

PC Gamer has reported that an Asus representative has told them that the handheld comes in at below 1000$. While the price is around double the base Steam Deck, what’s being offered in my opinion is totally worth it. However, let’s wait for the official release on May 11 for final pricing and other stuff.
