Reigns: Three Kingdoms, the fifth entry in the mobile strategy series from Devolver Digital, has just released the new trailer “What the Facts”, which breaks down its core gameplay. Reigns: Three Kingdoms will launch this week on November 29th, 2022. It’ll be available on iOS and Android, as an exclusive for Netflix subscribers.
The Reigns series is probably best known for its third installment, which boasted a Game of Thrones theme shortly before the final season frustrated longtime fans of the show. Reigns has a novelty premise, but it works as a mobile game.
A highlight of today’s trailer is surely the addition of “combat”, which arguably should have been a fundamental since the beginning. It adds replay value and some semblance of action, rephrasing the context of the gameplay.
The theme is definitely promising, as the Three Kingdoms have been the basis for countless video games. It’s rich with culture and history, and has been explored in the likes of Dynasty Warriors, or even upcoming titles such as Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, as seen in its very first trailer. There are opportunities for some very familiar names and battles, even if it isn’t built on a popular IP.
Reigns: Three Kingdoms will still be published by Devolver Digital, who has cemented themselves as an indie studio gem. Most recently, they announced Pepper Grinder for 2023. But they’re often known for their sharp sense of humor, as in their upcoming game Stick it to the Stickman, or Cult of the Lamb.
This humor didn’t really fit their new Reigns game, so it’s strange to see a pun in today’s trailer title. But either way, the gameplay looks promising with a “5-hour” campaign and new mini-games. The series sorely needed more content, especially if it’s going to limit itself to Netflix subscribers.
