PlayStation has just officially revealed that their VR2 headset, which comes with PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers, will be available on February 22, 2023, at an expected retail price of $549.99 USD. Fans will be able to pre-order the device just a couple of weeks from now, starting November 15th, 2022. Here’s the full statement from PlayStation:
For $599.99 USD, there will also be a bundle that includes Horizon Call of the Mountain, which is the flagship VR title for the device, just as the core series supports the main PlayStation platforms. This doesn’t appear to create any kind of discount, but the themed packaging is certainly nice.
Horizon Call of the Mountain will follow Ryas, and will include a “River Ride” experience that seems to harken back to the Jurassic Park novel. The announcement trailer was released for last June’s State of Play, and looks pretty promising. The action is staged well, which is crucial in VR, and the game will also introduce a few new faces:
Sadly, although the Controller Charging Station will launch on the same day as the VR2, it will also be sold as a separate device for $49.99. It’s annoying that this doesn’t come with the VR2, but it is advantageous that it doesn’t need to be connected to the PlayStation 5. There’s no word on how long a full charge is expected to last.
Honestly, the high price tag for PlayStation’s VR2 is both unsurprising and disappointing. The device probably won’t perform very well at launch, since it basically costs the same as an actual PlayStation 5 console, minus the charging station.
Since it requires a console to work, it’s akin to purchasing two PlayStation 5 consoles, and players are far more likely to do that. There’s more value in the primary console, which offers more features and games.
Nearly a dozen new VR titles were also announced today, attempting to convince buyers. These include The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR, Crossfire: Sierra Squad, and more. You can find the full list on PlayStation’s official post.
