Sony has confirmed that a free PlayStation Plus multiplayer weekend will take place between December 10th and 11th, allowing players to jump into their favorite online games without the need to be subscribed to the service.
“Team up with your friends or go head-to-head with other players in your favorite PS4 and PS5 games, without a PlayStation Plus membership this weekend. Our Online Multiplayer Weekend is live from Dec 10-11”, reads the official announcement from the Twitter account of PlayStation. Exactly what time players will be able to jump into the free weekend was not confirmed by PlayStation.
Unless a game is free-to-play, PlayStation users are required to be subscribed to Sony’s PlayStation Plus service if they want to play their purchased titles online. Subscribing to the service doesn’t just get you into multiplayer though, as PlayStation also offers a wide variety of added extras depending on the tier level of your subscription.
PlayStation Plus recently went through a complete revamp, and now offers three different tiers for players to subscribe to, all at varied prices. PlayStation Plus Essential is the lowest tier available, which offers “all the core PlayStation Plus benefits”, according to Sony. This includes online play, new games to download every month, and exclusive discounts.
The next tier is PlayStation Plus Extra, which offers all the included benefits of the Essential tier, as well as access to a wide array of titles in the game catalogue, which features hundreds of games to download at no extra cost. Then, we have PlayStation Plus Premium, which includes all the core PlayStation Plus benefits, hundreds of games in the game catalogue, and premium benefits like game trials, cloud streaming, and access to classic titles from the original PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and more.
It’s worth noting that the aforementioned benefits won’t be available during the upcoming free weekend, and will simply allow players to jump into multiplayer without the need for a subscription. The free PlayStation Plus multiplayer weekend will take place between December 10th and 11th on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
