Portland, Ore. – Armed with signs reading, “OHSU Mutilates Live Pigs in OB/GYN Drills,” PETA supporters will attend an Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Board of Directors meeting on Wednesday to call out the school’s invasive medical training procedures on live pigs.

When:    Wednesday, April 19, 2:40 p.m.

Where:    Robertson Life Sciences Building, Room 3A002, 2730 S. Moody Ave., Portland

The action comes after a PETA supporter questioned David Jacoby, dean of the OHSU School of Medicine, on Monday, challenging him to adopt animal-free training methods for OB/GYN residency training.

“While universities around the country refuse to use live, suffering pigs as human stand-ins, OHSU’s body count is rising,” says PETA Vice President Shalin Gala. “PETA will keep the pressure on OHSU to adopt high-tech, humane training methods that benefit physicians and patients without harming animals.”

At least 64 OHSU OG/BYN residents have cut into up to 48 live female pigs, dissected their organs, and performed other invasive surgeries on them in attempts to learn human medicine. All the pigs were later killed.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
