In the first trailer for Universal Pictures’ horror-comedy Renfield, slated for release on April 14, Nicholas Hoult’s henchman of the same name makes it his mission to get out of his “toxic relationship” with his longtime boss, Dracula (Nicolas Cage).
The New Orleans-shot film directed by Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War) picks up with Renfield at a point when he’s grown sick and tired of his centuries as the Prince of Darkness’ lackey. The characted finds a new lease on life and maybe even redemption when he falls for the feisty and perennially angry traffic cop, Rebecca Quincy (Awkwafina).
Ryan Ridley (Ghosted) penned the script for the monster movie also starring Ben Schwartz, Adrian Martinez, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Bess Rous and more, which is based on an original story outline by The Walking Dead‘s Robert Kirkman. McKay produced alongside Skybound Entertainment’s film team, including Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst and Sean Furst, with his own producing partner Samantha Nisenboim exec producing.
For now, Renfield‘s sole competitor in its opening weekend is the anime Suzume no tojimari, directed for Crunchyroll by Makoto Shinkai (Weathering with You).
Up next on the docket for release by Universal is the buzzy sci-fi horror M3GAN, which hits theaters tomorrow. Other anticipated titles coming up from the studio include M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin (February 3), Elizabeth Banks’ Cocaine Bear (February 24) and The Super Mario Bros. Movie (April 7), to name a few.
