Mario Strikers: Battle League, the football (soccer) game that released on Nintendo Switch last June, has released a new trailer featuring the upcoming stadium, characters and gear that will be available in the next update.
The third free update rolls out tomorrow on December 13th, including Bowser Jr., Birdo, Shellfish gear, and the new Urban Rooftop stadium. Here’s the full trailer from Nintendo, so you can review all the new content:
With the World Cup generating worldwide hype right now, it couldn’t be a more perfect time for Mario Strikers: Battle League to introduce another free update.
The game is unexpectedly competitive, and more challenging than other casual sports games in the Mario universe, but it’s a worthwhile investment and perhaps a little overlooked. So, it’s nice that each update is adding new characters to master. Also, making them free of charge is key to invite new players. Luckily, the latest additions are both fan favorites, which players have been asking about for some time.
Birdo feels like a totally natural, and maybe even obvious addition. Her classic ability to fire eggs is translated into precision shooting in Mario Strikers, which makes sense. The animations and abilities certainly look terrific. Meanwhile, Bowser Jr. is ironically sold mainly as a balanced character.
The stats in today’s trailer have worried some players, as new characters continue to stray from the balanced gameplay in previous iterations of the Mario Strikers series.
The new stadium received plenty of design praise, but fans are more interested in new content that will offer more variety in the gameplay. Many fans have sounded off about Career mode or online tournaments that would help shake up the redundancy of the core game.
