Bloomington, Ind. – On Thursday, in the lead-up to National Cheese Day (June 4), a local pregnant PETA supporter will bare her baby bump, painted to show a blissful cow nuzzling her calf, to remind everyone that cows make milk for their calves—and that it’s easy to practice kindness to mothers of all species by opting for delicious vegan food. To drive that message home, she’ll give away Babybel Plant-Based cheese snacks.

When:    Thursday, June 1, 12 noon

Where:    E. Kirkwood Avenue and N. Dunn Street, Bloomington

The dairy industry forcibly impregnates cows and separates newborn calves from their mothers so that their milk can be sold to humans, leaving the mother cows bellowing in grief and chasing the trucks that take their babies away. Male calves are routinely slaughtered for veal, while female calves, like their mothers, are used as milk-producing machines until their bodies wear out and they’re sent to slaughter.

“Cows love their calves, but the dairy industry tears mother and baby apart just so humans can drink milk and eat cheese,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA reminds everyone that cows produce milk for the same reason we do, which is to nourish their young, and urges everyone to choose delicious vegan options instead.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat or abuse in any other way” and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview—offers free vegan starter kits to help anyone make the switch.
