Capcom acquires graphics firm Swordcanes

Japanese games giant Capcom has acquired Swordcanes Studios.

The two companies previously worked together on the recently-released Street Fighter 6. Swordcanes is a 3D graphics specialist that is based in Tokyo and was founded back in May 2018.

In addition to Capcom, Swordcanes has worked with a variety of companies including Square Enix, Tango Gameworks and Bandai Namco. Recently, the firm has contributed to Final Fantasy 16 and HiFi Rush as well as Capcom’s Monster Hunter Rise.

“Swordcanes strength lies in 3D computer graphics production technology in consumer home video game development and the studio has carried out work on major Capcom titles in the past,” Capcom wrote.

“As such, Capcom decided to make the studio its wholly-owned subsidiary to sustainably bolster its developmental and technological capabilities.

“Going forward, Capcom will continue to explore the acquisition of necessary technological capabilities in order to enhance its game development organisation.”

This is the first studio acquisition that Capcom has made in some time. The last company that the Japanese giant purchased was Blue Castle Games in 2010, which was rebranded to Capcom Vancouver. That studio was closed in 2018.
