Amsterdam hotel manager criticises building’s ‘undesirable’ inclusion in Modern Warfare 2

The manager of an Amsterdam hotel featured in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 has criticised its “unwanted” inclusion in the game.

Modern Warfare 2 accurately captures not only the general structure of some Amsterdam locations but many buildings and even signage too – although the names of businesses and brands featured in the game have been changed due to copyright reasons.

While some have praised the game’s realistic depiction of the Netherlands’ capital city, the manager of the 5-star Conservatorium Hotel has hit out at the building’s appearance in the game.

The building appears in Modern Warfare 2 as the Breenbergh Hotel, which is also the name of one of the game’s multiplayer maps.

“We have taken note of the fact that the Conservatorium Hotel is undesirably the scene of the new Call of Duty,” hotel manager Roy Tomassen told De Volkskrant. “More generally, we don’t support games that seem to encourage the use of violence. The game in no way reflects our core values and we regret our apparent and unwanted involvement.”

The hotel is said to be still considering possible steps, which may or may not include legal action.

A multiplayer map in 2019’s Modern Warfare called Piccadilly recreated Piccadilly Circus, a landmark area of London known for its huge advertising board. The spot briefly became a popular tourist destination for TikTok users who created a trend of pointing out areas in the real world that were notorious for “campers” in Modern Warfare’s multiplayer mode.

Modern Warfare 2 was released on October 28 and enjoyed the biggest PlayStation Store launch ever for a Call of Duty game, including pre-orders and day one sales, according to Sony.

The game’s new attachment tuning feature has temporarily been turned off due to reports that it’s causing crashes, developer Infinity Ward has confirmed.
