Steel Defier, an upcoming action indie from developer Viridino Studios and publisher Ratalaika Games, will officially launch on March 24th, 2023. The game will be available on PC via Steam, as well as the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox. Here’s the full announcement from Ratalaika Games’ official Twitter feed:
Steel Defier has the charm of a classic computer game, with a simple idea and breezy gameplay. It may not be overly ambitious, but it does promise to succeed in its goals, and the central premise looks like plenty of fun.
There are some sci-fi features in here that look like nods to Portal, which similarly had a hero in orange attempting to escape a series of deadly chambers. The boxes quite resemble companion cubes, and the blue walls are similar to light bridges.
But these feel like acceptable winks because Steel Defier still has its own loop and flow going on. The trailer on Steel Defier’s official Steam page shows how much the devs cleverly play with foreground and timing. The art design is bright, the movement looks pretty smooth, and the concept is very accessible. Also, the synth music is a good match for the setting and really helps define the mood.
It’s hard to tell if anyone would be very excited by something like this, but the dev team has a solid start here. It’d be nice to see them expand into something a little more inventive, since they seem to have a sturdy foundation on everything else.
There are also more details and mechanisms than some recent titles from Ratalaika Games. Ratalaika Games frequently publishes tiny games like Pets at Work, and their titles can range from strange little duds to overlooked gems.
